Things to do in Ponce with your rental car
Updated: October 2026 · Master Car Rental, Ponce
Ponce is best enjoyed by car: the historic center is walkable, but the haciendas, lookouts, beaches and mountains are 10, 20 or 40 minutes away. Here are 12 stops with driving times from our office in El Tuque.
Historic downtown (10 min)
Park near Plaza Las Delicias and walk to the Parque de Bombas firehouse, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Lions Fountain and the neoclassical facades of Isabel Street. Saturdays are livelier, and an afternoon ice cream at King's Cream across from the plaza is a must.
Ponce Museum of Art (10 min)
One of the most important European art collections in the Caribbean, with Flaming June as its star piece. Check opening hours before going, since the building has had closures for renovation work.
Castillo Serrallés and the Cruceta del Vigía (12 min)
On top of El Vigía hill sit the mansion of the Don Q rum family, with its gardens, and the giant cross with the best panoramic view of the city and the coast. Driving up is the easy way; there is parking at the top.
La Guancha (8 min)
The seaside boardwalk with food kiosks, pelicans and boats. Perfect for sunset with a pincho and a cold Medalla. Boat trips to Caja de Muertos, the island with white-sand beach and lighthouse, leave from here when the service is running.
Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Center (15 min)
The oldest indigenous site in the Caribbean: ceremonial plazas, ball courts and a small museum. Great with kids; bring repellent and water.
Hacienda Buena Vista (25 min)
A 19th-century coffee hacienda in Barrio Magueyes, run by Para la Naturaleza, with its original water-powered machinery still working. Visits are by reservation; PR-123 is a mountain road, so an SUV is welcome.
Panoramic Route: Adjuntas and Jayuya (40 to 60 min)
PR-10 climbs to Adjuntas, the Town of the Sleeping Giant, with cool weather, coffee and lookouts; from there the Panoramic Route continues to Jayuya and Toro Negro Forest. Leave early and head back before dark.
Coamo Hot Springs (30 min)
Thermal baths used since Taíno times. Combine them with downtown Coamo and a roadside lunch along PR-153.
Southern beaches: Guánica and La Parguera (40 to 60 min)
Playa Santa, Gilligan's Island and the Dry Forest in Guánica; La Parguera's bioluminescent bay in Lajas for the night. See our guide to southern beaches by car.
Yauco, the Coffee Town (30 min)
A colorful center, local coffee shops and coffee haciendas in the hills. A good stop on the way to or from the southwest beaches.
Shopping and food
Plaza del Caribe for shopping and movies, Ponce's famous quenepas in season (July to September) at roadside stands, and the seaside food shacks along PR-2 toward Peñuelas.
