South Puerto Rico beaches by car

Updated: October 2026 · Master Car Rental, Ponce

The south has the calmest sea on the island and fewer crowds than the metro area. From Ponce, all of these beaches are between 10 minutes and an hour and fifteen minutes away by car.

La Guancha, Ponce (10 min)

More boardwalk than beach, but it is the south's meeting point: food kiosks, weekend music and the departure point for boats. Plenty of parking.

Caja de Muertos, Ponce (boat from La Guancha)

A nature reserve with a white-sand beach, a reef for snorkeling and a lighthouse you can hike to. Reached by boat excursion when the service is running; there is no shade or food for sale, so bring everything.

Playa Santa and Gilligan's Island, Guánica (45 min)

Playa Santa has calm water, ideal for kids, with kayaks and kiosks. From the San Jacinto pier, boats run to Gilligan's Island (Cayo Aurora), a mangrove key with crystal-clear channels. Go early: the parking lot fills up.

Dry Forest and Guánica Bay (40 min)

The Guánica Dry Forest is a Biosphere Reserve: short trails, cacti and sea views. Along the bay road there are small coves where you will rarely find anyone.

Playa Ventana, Guayanilla (25 min)

A long, quiet beach next to Guayanilla Bay, good for an uncrowded afternoon.

La Parguera, Lajas (50 min)

A fishing village with restaurants over the water and the bioluminescent bay, visited by boat or kayak at night (best with no moon). By day, boats run to the keys with swimming platforms.

Boquerón and Buyé, Cabo Rojo (1 h 10 min)

Boquerón is one of the island's longest and most popular beaches, with a public bathing area, oyster kiosks and a village with nightlife. Ten minutes away, Buyé has turquoise water and almond-tree shade.

Playa Sucia and Los Morrillos Lighthouse, Cabo Rojo (1 h 15 min)

The postcard of the southwest: cliffs, the lighthouse and a white-sand crescent. The last stretch is a dirt road and the walk to the lighthouse is short but sunny; bring water and closed shoes.

Jobos Bay and Salinas beach (35 min)

To the east, the mangrove reserve of Jobos Bay and the Salinas waterfront, famous for mojo isleño sauce. Eat by the water and catch the sunset.

Frequently asked questions

Which beach is closest to Ponce?

La Guancha is 10 minutes from downtown, though it is more boardwalk than swimming beach. For sand and calm water, Playa Santa in Guánica is about 35 minutes away.

Can I do Cabo Rojo and get back to Ponce the same day?

Yes. Playa Sucia and Boquerón are a little over an hour away. Leaving early gives you beach time, lunch in Boquerón and the drive back before dark.

Can you see the bioluminescent bay from the car?

No. You need a night boat or kayak tour from La Parguera; the car gets you to the village, where there is parking.
